The palace did do their best to minimise the tat ahead of the big wedding. They released an official collection of memorabilia exclusively handmade for the Royal Collection in Stoke-on-Trent which was personally signed off by the happy couple, along with strict guidelines about what unofficial gifts would be appropriate.
Yet somehow, we still got commemorative condoms courtesy of Crown Jewels Condoms of Distinction. This is our pick of the best and worst of the wedding memorabilia.
What we liked:
The pill box. Might seem a strange one at first, but it really shows that the Queen understands her demographic and chose something she knew they would use.
Also from the official collection, the tankard mug, featuring the couple’s entwined initials in gold and silver surmounted by the coronet of Prince William and the wedding date. A classic design made from good quality china — this is a gift that will serve as a lasting souvenir of the occasion.
The Union Jack iPhone case wasn’t overtly royalist — it seemed to be celebrating Britishness as much as the royal union. And iPhone cases are set to be a hugely popular promotional product this year.
The Pez dispenser was good product, but it was the way it was auctioned for charity, raising £8200 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, that really impressed us.
What slipped past the net:
The imitation sapphire ‘Diana’ rings. Tacky, cheap and slightly creepy, what else can we say?
The aforementioned condoms, or ‘heirloom-quality prophylactics’, made by Crown Jewel Condoms. How did this happen?
What do you get the die-hard monarchist who already has every item of memorabilia? A whole fridge printed with William and Kate’s engagement photo, made by GE appliances.
“It certainly wipes the floor with your usual commemorative tea towels and mugs and is most definitely one of the most novel royal wedding products we have seen” says David Garden, the company’s commercial director.
What made us giggle:
If you weren’t on the wedding excitement bandwagon, you could express your disdain with a Royal Wedding sick bag, or Kate and William tea bags showing Kate stuffing dollar bills into her bra. Cheeky!
